A Voyage of Success - Curragh Crossing from Portpatrick to Donaghadee
24/09/2007

Tom Hogan Motors would like to Congratulate the four oarsmen (Patrick O'Malley, Martin Freeney, Niall Higgins and Fergus Colleran) who made the first sea crossing by Currach from Scotland to Northern Ireland on Friday 14th September.

To take advantage of favourable weather conditions, the oarsmen left a day earlier than originally planned, but they still had to contend with a strong crosswind and a tidal current of 2.5 knots, which resulted in their planned straight line journey of 18.7 miles to increase to approximately 25 miles.

The crossing lasted 7.5 hours from 10.55 am to 18.25 pm, and the boys were given a warm welcome on arrival in Donaghadee by members of the local RNLI Rotary, the 'Rib Raiders' boating club and locals, who assembled in Pier 36, a well known hostelry located at the harbourside.

Tom Hogan Motors are delighted to have had a small involvement in this great accomplishment by the four boys and wish them the very best of luck in all their future endeavours.
